I luckily visited Boracay before it hit the headlines for shutting down due to pollution. It has now re-opened and I have heard it is still a magical place to visit. The scenery is beautiful with amazing white sand beaches and the atmosphere is more lively than anywhere else we visited on our trip. After a few weeks spent in quieter beach towns, it was fun to arrive to Boracay with it’s bustling town and vast choice of restaurants and bars.
How did we get there?
There are 2 ways to get to Boracay. You can either get a (usually) cheaper flight to Kalibo and then a bus to Caticlan which takes just over an hour and a half. Or you can fly directly to Caticlan. From Caticlan airport, you just need to walk about 5 minutes down the road to the port where you can jump on a ferry across to the island which only takes about 15 minutes. We flew into Caticlan from Cebu and then got the ferry across which was nice and easy.
Where did we stay and for how long?
We stayed in Boracay for 3 nights at the end of our trip. We stayed at the Microtel by Wyndham situated on Diniwid beach towards the North of the island. This end is slightly quieter with a great choice of accommodation and quieter beaches. I would definitely recommend the hotel, although further from the central town, they ran a free shuttle frequently until late in the evening and it was more relaxing to stay out of all the hustle and bustle. The hotel has it’s own pool right on the beach front so it was the perfect way to finish our holiday.

What did we do whilst we were there?
Boracay is a great place to chill out so we actually didn’t embark on many activities whilst we were here. After 2 jam-packed weeks we made the most of sunbathing and swimming and sipping cocktails.
The most popular attraction is of course White Beach which is most likely what you have seen in people’s photos. For me, this was one of the many highlights of our trip, sitting at one of the beach bars under the palm trees on beanbags drinking cocktails as the sun set. The sunset here is truly spectacular as all the little sail boats zig zag between each other. You can actually go on a sunset sail with many people selling packages right on the beach.
It is definitely worth taking a walk around the island. You can walk all the way up from White Beach South to White Beach North and continue up to Diniwid beach. It is a scenic walk around the headland and a refreshing escape from the crowds in the main town.
There are also many other activities you can do whilst staying in Borcay including yoga, the Mount Luho view point, volleyball, sailing, snorkelling, windsurfing, cliff jumping and massages.
