I visited Mexico in late April 2018. This was my first time to Central America having mostly done Asia before so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know what to expect in terms of how developed it would be – would it have remote islands with no cars like the Gili Islands etc?
Safe to say I quickly fell in love. The Yucatan peninsula in Mexico is definitely one for the bucket list. It has everything to offer in one holiday – beaches, jungle, swimming, snorkelling, ancient ruins and not to mention the most AMAZING food ever! If you like guacamole… you just gotta go!
Getting There: We flew from London Heathrow to Cancun going via Mexico City to save some money and only had a 2 hour lay-over between which worked perfectly. If you are prepared to change in Mexico City you can save quite a lot of money.
London > Mexico City approximately 12 hours
Mexico City > Cancun approximately 2 hours

Where Did We Go: After extensive research we decided not to stay in Cancun but to head straight on. The 14 day itinerary we decided on was:
Cancun > Holbox > Valladolid > Bacalar > Tulum > Isla Mujeres > Cancun
Holbox – 3 nights
Valladolid – 2 nights
Bacalar – 2 nights
Tulum – 4 nights
Isla Mujeres – 2 nights
Accommodation: I booked all our accommodation through booking.com and even though it might sometimes be slightly more expensive than booking directly with the accommodation, I love the ease of the booking process and the reviews are super useful so I prefer to do it this way!
Getting Around: It’s super easy and pretty cheap to get around in this region of Mexico. The main bus company is called ADO and they operate almost all routes you would want to take. Tickets can be bought at the bus stations in advance or just before you travel and the buses range from standard which is pretty hot with little air con to first class which is a few pounds more for probably the comfiest bus I have ever been on! Either way they are cheap, and you can search for the timetables online so are easy to use. Others prefer to hire a car but you need to bear in mind where you will park it in each location so sometimes easier to get the bus.
What To Do: My idea of a fun holiday is one which involves seeing lots of different places, doing different types of activities whilst also having a good few days to relax by the beach. The Yucatan offers jungle, beach, ruins and lakes and is famous for its cenotes which are natural sink holes. They are all different, some are more like lakes, others are far underground in caves but when visiting this region, making sure you pay a visit to one of these is a must! For the adrenaline junkies out there, many have cliff jumps, rope swings and zip wires too! There are also lots of ancient ruins to explore and you can learn more about the Mayan culture and see some incredible views, you won’t be disappointed!
